I belong to a couple of guilds: Quilters by the Sea in Long Beach and Orange Grove Quilters Guild in Garden Grove. For Christmas OGQG gave their members this beverage mug.

What a great idea. Quilters make it their own and at the same time quit adding those paper or Styrofoam cups to the land fill. I decided to make selvedge fabric.

And, here is my personal quilter's mug, ready to take with me to the February meeting.

I love it. Now to remember to take it with me; and to remember to bring it home. But, I’m going to try real hard.

2012 UFO CHALLENGE

Just Do It, Quilter!

Jump in with Both Feet is a quilt from scratch; a kit you bought some time ago, fabric you have loved or a pattern or technique you have wanted to try.

Do Your Part. If you make a charity or auction quilt, you will receive double raffle tickets!

In Your Closet. This one is a true UFO that has been started, waiting to be finished.

QBS Workshop. If you finish a quilt from a 2012 QBS workshop, you will receive double raffle tickets!

This is what I’m doing for Jump in with Both Feet. I bought this Gee’s Bend quilt kit after thinking about getting one for a couple of years. I would pick one up, and put it back down at several shops. After all, I could come up with something on my own close to it. But, I really wanted one of these women's quilt designs. Finally last fall I had a 25% off coupon for a local shop; and guess what, they had these Gee’s Bend quilt kits. It was a no brainer at that point. I got the top done. Yes, it was quick, easy and most of all, fun.

I also think it will be fun to quilt. Maybe lots of interesting straight lines.

DID I REALLY PURCHASE MORE FABRIC?

Yes, I did. But, isn't it great? Road to California has vendors that we don't usually see. So, I had to get this; I might not see it again. That's my story and I'm stickin to it.

Wendy Richardson of QTStudio.com lives in Minnesota and hand dyes all her fabrics. She even hand dyes, socks, shirts, scarves. Just wonderful. Now, what will I make....

I'M ON THE ROAD

Road to California Quilt Show that is. We always look so forward to this great event each January in Southern California. It’s a big deal, honest.

Besides it being a great show of fabulous quilts, there are a ton of vendors. We love vendors don't we? They also offer a wonderful variety of classes. Another thing that we love. This year I will be taking Cindy Needham’s machine quilting class: Ready, Set, Go…Let’s Quilt. Thanks for Robin, I am prepared. She put together quilt sandwiches for me.

My hope is to get even a tiny bit as good as this sample. I'll post my samples when I get back. Maybe.

MY PRESIDENT'S QUILT

Last Thursday I received a most fabulous President’s Quilt from my quilty friends with Quilters by the Sea Quilt Guild. It is tradition that the out-going president spear heads this project and make the quilt. (guess what I’ll be doing this year?) Sonia Das selected bright houses for me. I think it is absolutely perfect. Don’t you?

I am so thrilled with it. I can’t wait to put it to use. I may just put it on my guest bed and change which side I show, weekly. I really can't decide which side I like better. Thank you to all of you at QBS and a huge thank you to Sonia for such an excellent quilt to treasure forever.

NEW PROJECT REVISITED

Remember that post about a new project a while ago? Last night I turned over the President's gavel to this year's president. It is tradition that the outgoing president give thank you gifts to the Board. I used Robin's wonderful pattern the Tote Along.

I put the guild's logo on one side of the pocket. Long Beach has gone plastic bag free and you must provide your own bags at stores or pay 10 cents per paper bag. So, these just may come in handy. And, I think they turned out pretty cute. I had an oops on one bag (not too bad out of 35). I mean a big oops. One handle got put on twisted. I triple sew these handles down and decided NOT us unsew. The lucky person who got he "oops" Tote Along got this pattern with fabric as a gift. Marisole, Vice President of Workshops, was the lucky person. I bet she gets it made.

Now it's time for another new project.

A TOTE FOR TOTES

Yesterday I had to make a run to Hoffman Fabrics. I'm not the best photographer; or maybe it's the old eyes.

You have probably seen that cartoon going around the internet about needing a tote for totes. I saw this in Hoffman's office and just had to snap a photo with my phone. They used Seaside Cottage fabric design for the mega tote. As you can see, it is almost as big as the coffee table. I love it.

A GIVEAWAY

I was going to have a giveaway for Thanksgiving. That never happened. Then I was going to have a giveaway for post 300. Again that didn’t happen. And, I was going to have one for Christmas. FRIENDS

I belong to a great friendship group. We call ourselves the Wednesday Wackos. Each year for Christmas, we meet at one of the member's home for a potluck and exchange gifts with each other. We often start thinking about these gifts at the first of the year. That doesn't mean we don't change our minds several times until we hit upon the right one. It is fun coming up with that certain something and getting it ready for the party.

We each take a turn passing out our gifts and everyone opens just that gift at the same time. It makes that warm glow of sharing last all the longer.

This year I made these little zippered bags and tried to match up likes and personalities. Do you see the cat person? I used the pattern over on Moda Bakeshop see here.

I so adore these women and the joy they bring to each other. I feel truly blessed. No, I didn't get pictures of the party; I was too darn busy having fun.

ANOTHER FINISH

I like to machine stitch the binding down for baby quilts.

A SHORT TRIP

I've been gone for the past few days. For over 30 years my friend Sue and I have kicked off our Christmas season together by shopping and playing. We started doing this in San Francisco when I lived in the Bay Area. Now, we live a good 400 miles apart and meet in the middle. And, what a nice relaxing fun time we had. As I was leaving our serene setting, I couldn't help snapping a photo with my phone to say goodbye till next year.

That golden hill is the changing fall color of the wine-grape vines. I saw this for miles and miles. It was gorgeous, and the small two-lane highways didn't distract from the view. But, in a few hours . . . .

It was dark by the time I made it home and very windy. Back to eight-lane roads. Back to reality. Back to fun life that I enjoy in a different way.

Last June my youngest granddaughter, Noelle, was here for an extended vacation.

While here, she designed her very own quilt using her Leapster Pad.

OK, so it's blurry; but, you get the idea.

Showing it to me she said "Grandma, I want you to make this for me with six snowmen". What would you do? Yes of course you would. Her birthday is December 16. So with a little quilter's license, here is Miss Noelle's Quilt.

Today is Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday of the year. It is all about family and being thankful. It is also when most of us take a moment and reflect on for what we are thankful. I have so much for which to be thankful; but, here are 10 on my list.

10. My first cup of coffee in the morning that helps me wake up and begin a new day.

9. Life’s challenges as they as give me the opportunity to become a better person.

8. Rainbows because they follow the storm and offer a promise of beauty.

7. My home that gives me comfort and peace.

6. My hobbies that keep my mind active and challenged.

5. Emotions of all kinds for they let me know how alive I am.

4. Pets for teaching me patience and giving me joy.

3. Best friends for being there for me without even asking.

I noticed on my Yahoo homepage, that "Trending Now" was Clean Out Your Fridge. So, intrigued, I had to click on it. That's when I found out it is "National Clean Out Your Fridge Day". Seriously, it is. I tried to ignore it; I really did. I have plans to sew today. My granddaughter's birthday is next month and she wants a quilt. But, I went and peeked inside.

I had been having trouble finding things. So, I did it.

Deciding to clean out the fridge: most of the morning.
Time to actually clean out the fridge: 30 minutes
Feeling of accomplishment: priceless

Now off to work on that quilt.

QUILTERS BY THE SEA "SEA TO SEA" DAY 2

This past weekend we had a great quilt show with beautiful quilts, wonderful vendors, along with a great boutique and raffles galore. We even had a live and a silent auction. I managed to spread my money around the various vendors and have a great time at the auctions. Well, somebody has to help with the economy. I'm doing my part.

I won this gorgeous quilt at the live auction. I had been eyeing it on the wall. I could not get very close to it; but, I loved it right from the beginning. So, I decided that was going to be the one I would bid on and even put a dollar limit for it in my mind. When it finally came up to bid, what a surprise to hear that it was made by a member of my friendship group, Pat. This just made it all the better. Please visit her blog and see her amazing work. But, wait.... it is a two for one. This is the other side of the quilt.

I know. How cool is that? Thank you my friend. You did a fabulous job.

I also bought this table runner because it looks perfect in my house. I don't know if anyone took credit for this one. No label on the back. Come on quilters... you need to label your work.

And that adorable Santa was made by Karen, and I managed to place the last bid in time to win it at the silent auction. Isn't he adorable?

And, of course like most guilds, we had Opportunity Baskets for raffle. I'm fairly lucky with raffles. And, I won the one I wanted. If you know me, you understand why it is so perfect.

It is a coffee basket. Oh yes.

Just look at the loot, not to mention the four homemade placemats with coffee fabric.

Thank you to the wonderful Quilt Show Chairs and their committee along with the many volunteers. Without you we never would have had such a wonderful event.

QUILTERS BY THE SEA "SEA TO SEA" QUILT SHOW - DAY 1

Today was the first day of our quilt show and I know I told you we cannot take photographs inside the building, and we cannot. But, if you ask really nice, you can get the colonel to take a picture for you. He can. I didn't push my luck; I just asked for one.

QUILT SHOW SET UP

Quilters by the Sea Quilt Guild is having its quilt show this weekend, October 22 & 23, 2011. It is at the Armory is Long Beach. We cannot take pictures inside for obvious reasons. So we will be selling DVDs with pictures of all the quilt entries. Therefore, the only picture I have for today is of Karen and Becky sitting outside collecting quilts for hanging. It was quite a process setting up. But, I must say it looked wonderful when I left this evening.

I hope to see some of your smiling faces in the next couple of days.

THIS AND THAT

I haven't been sewing lately. Two Wacky Women held a quilt retreat last weekend, featuring Lyn Brown. There were 26 of us including the Wacky Women and Lyn. Lyn designed this quilt for the retreat and we had a contest to name the quilt.

Lyn selected Gloria's name of Laguna Nights. Isn't that a great name? We all really had a great time. Go check out our Two Wacky Women website and read about our 2012 retreats.

This weekend is Quilters by the Sea's quilt show. I have three quilts that will be in the show.

They are packed and ready to take for hanging tomorrow.

The show is Saturday, October 22, & Sunday, October 23, 2011. If you are in the area, I sure hope you can make it. You can read about it here.

But for today, the two big elm trees are getting trimmed and the girls are at the groomers.

The trees get trimmed once a year. The girls get groomed once a month.

IT'S FINISHED

Finally. And just in time for Thursday's Quilters by the Sea Meeting. You see, this was an UFO I committed to finish by the October meeting.

I must say, this probably would have sat in its bag for a very long time had it not been for our Special Event committee who came up with this challenge. Big thanks to Ann, Pat, and Jerilee for being that inspiration to get those UFOs done. I have named it La Luce ed il Lato Sucro della Luna, Italian for The Light and Dark Side of the Moon. We struggled becoming friends; but, we now have a better understanding of one another. However, it really does have a dark side. Now on to my UFO that is due in December: Wavy Log Cabin.

FRIENDS REVISITED

Remember my recent post about the F-R-I-E-N-D-S swap I was in? You can read about it here. I received mine from my new friend, Judy.

Judy lives in New York and I got this package only two days after she mailed it. Judy doesn't know me; but, she must be a good study. Look what she sent me.

FINISHED IS GOOD

I haven't been posting because my computer, which I call Connie, has been sick. Very sick. Connie is better now. However, she is getting a new younger sister that will get picked up this afternoon. Name to be determined.

In the meantime, there are a couple of finishes. Remember Cindy's Panda Twist? You can see it here. It is now ready to go to our Community Relations group with Quilters by the Sea.

Thank you for your the input on the flange. I decided to use the Nascar check and make the faux piping binding. Love that trick.

Also, if you follow Robin's blog, you know we have been making a healing quilt together. Here is the link. It is now finished and ready to be delivered this weekend.

And lastly, before I go to pick up Connie's new sister, here is a photo of how the avocado tree (named Kalani's tree) is doing. Come December and January, guacamole will be in order.

What's Up?

Do you like to watch award shows? You know the ones I mean, the Oscars, the Tonys, or the Emmys? I do. I have a good friend who always comes over to watch these with me. On Sunday she brought me this fabulous potted plant. (Thanks Susan) Don't you just love that thimble? It is sitting on the fabric I hope to cut out tonight. It's Robert Kaufman Daisies and Dots.

I decided I needed a break from the moon quilt. So, except for working with Robin on a quilt the past two days, I have not been sewing much. Go on over and take a peak; it is cute.

going around the net

1. I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die. Or in a quilter's home, your quilt room and divvy up the stash.
2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you're wrong.
3. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.
4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.
5. How the hell are you supposed to fold a fitted sheet?
6. Was learning cursive really necessary?
7. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on #5. I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.
8. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting if they told you how the person died.
9. I can't remember the last time I wasn't at least kind-of tired.
10. Bad decisions make good stories.
11. You never know when it will strike, but there comes a moment at work when you know that you just aren't going to do anything productive for the rest of the day.
12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after BlueRay? I don't want to have to restart my collection...again.
13. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page technical report that I swear I did not make any changes to.
14. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone just so I know not to answer when they call.
15. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.
16. I disagree with Kay Jewelers. I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night more kisses begin with Miller Lite than Kay.
17. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.
18. How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear or understand a word they said?
19. I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars team up to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front. Stay strong, brothers and sisters!
20. Shirts get dirty. Underwear gets dirty. Pants? Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.
21. Sometimes I'll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times and still not know what time it is.
22. Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone, and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey - but I'd bet everyone can find and push the snooze button from 3 feet away, in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time.

WHERE WERE YOU TEN YEARS AGO?

Tomorrow marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11. I bet most of us have a story to tell. I've been reading several on the blogs I follow. Living on the West Coast, it was early morning and I turned on my TV upon wakening. Katie Couric and Matt Lauer was talking about a freak accident where a plane had flown into one of the World Trade Center buildings in New York City. It was only a short time until we saw the 2nd plane fly into the other World Trade Center building. Now everyone knew this was no accident. And they also were reporting about the the Pentagon.

I immediately knocked on the other bedroom doors to tell everyone to get up to watch TV. Life, as we knew it, had changed. I still am saddened thinking about the immense loss of life and the why of it all.

I love this image. Thank goodness our spirit and hope still soars upward. Do you have a story to share about where you were or what you were doing when you heard about this? I hope you will share it.

Mine is finished, quilted, bound, and in the washer to take to guild tonight. I just did a simple straight-line quilting and even stitched the binding down on the machine. It's a good boy quilt, don't you think?

QUEEN OF THE NIGHT

Are you familiar with the night-blooming cactus known as, Queen of the Night? There is one in my backyard. For obvious reasons, it is hard to get a good picture.

I took this picture this evening before it got completely dark.

Here is one that I took last night. It doesn't bloom every year; but it does most years, and the bloom only lasts one night. This cactus is very large with over 50 blooms that will pop out a few each night until they are all gone. I just love this plant. Isn't mother nature fabulous?

GREY OR GRAY

I see it spelled both ways, and spellcheck doesn't care. So, I looked it up on line. Seems either is right. Grey is the English way of spelling it. Gray is the American English version, wanting to be more phonetic at some point. That being said, here is that yellow and grey or gray quilt top I need?

My inspiration came from Hyacinth Quilt Designs, Garden Fence. I left out the sashing, added a larger border and made it square. I'll just add that to the "need-to-quilt" pile. Baby isn't due till December and I hear the nursery is being decorated in yellow & grey or gray.

SPRUCING UP AROUND HERE

Tomorrow is already September. Hard to believe really. I always feel in the reset mode in early Spring or early Fall. And, yesterday (It's almost Fall) I decided I needed to spruce up my surroundings. It has been years since I changed anything around here. I also decided I needed some orange in my life before the new color is purple or something. Off I headed to Cost Plus World Market. The perfect place to find something new and orange. I immediately found this:

Now how could I pass on this? If you look closely, you will see that "N" is orange. I have started my sprucing up in my dining room. I found some new curtains and borrowed "stuff" from a couple of other rooms to get my theme going. What theme you say? Cost Plus World Market theme. I decided that what I needed most was a scarf for the buffet. Try buying one the right size. Ha! Oh sure, I could buy one and cut it down to size. But, I happen to have some fabric laying around here. So, now my buffet is so happy with its new Cost-Plus-themed scarf (only home made).

I just went with a simple stitch and flip method that ends up a quilt as you go. Easy as eating ice cream. I must be hungry.

I even stitched the binding down by machine. No one is going to look at that back (no you won't) and it will just quietly sit on that buffet until it gets bumped from another burst of redecorating energy.

It's finished. This is Robin's new pattern, Lattice Patch. It is a great pattern and uses those 10" squares or Layer Cakes we have stashed away and wonder what we are going to make with them. Of course, you can always cut your own 10" squares. I collect word fabric and used some of my collection for this. So, here is My Word.

QUILTERS BY THE SEA 2011 RETREAT FUN

Our guild, Quilters by the Sea, had its annual quilt retreat last weekend. We had many fun projects, games, and most of all, friends sharing time with each other. One project some of us worked on was a jelly roll race.

There were many more completed; but, you get the idea. The colors are as fun as seeing the hot-air balloons at one of their festivals.

A FUN WEEKEND

Robin and I had our own private sewing retreat. Well, we were also on a fact-finding mission to check out new retreat locations. But, more on that at another time. Nonetheless, we did accomplish a few things and had a great time in Palm Desert, California. What, you say? Palm Desert in August? Quilting is an air-conditioned indoor sport. And, by the time dinner rolls around, it is pretty nice.

Both of us made two of Robin's newest pattern: Easy Peasy. And, by the way, it is Easy Peasy. The one on the left is Robin's; mine is on the right. I also managed to get this cute quilt top done. Another one to put on the "need to quilt" pile.

We also took in the movie The Help. Wonderful movie.

CINDY'S PANDA TWIST

Cindy's 4th UFO isn't due until the October Quilter's by the Sea Guild meeting. But, I got the top finished today. I had contemplated adding a ribbon border. But, I called my BFF, Robin, after I messaged her a photo, and we decided it was done. After all, the Panda is the star. A ribbon border may be distracting.

It is a classic Garden Twist pattern. I was able to find all the blocks, including the set-in triangles, in a bag. Cindy also had more of the black and black and white prints. I only had to add one triangle to a corner to get all the Pandas looking at us. Now, what do you think? Should the binding be the black and white polka dot or use the black and keep it simple, simple, simple?

MY WEEK WITH RACHEL

My granddaughter, Rachel, spent the week with me. She flew in from Idaho last Sunday and she is winding her way back right now. We had a great time together. I schooled her on sewing. First up was a pillow case.

Next a laptop cover.

She also got two Click-It bags made.

She's going home with some Rachel-made loot.

Did you know that Thursday was National Chocolate Chip Day?

And we did get in some outings. We saw Cowboys and Aliens. And took in the Long Beach Aquarium.

And dinner at my favorite dinner haunt.

We even went to the Long Beach Playhouse and saw

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

I'm going to miss her. Next summer - sewing class here for any of the grands who might be interested.

BIG RED IS DONE

INTERNATIONAL QUILT FESTIVAL PART ONE

Yesterday was the first day of IQF in Long Beach. They had a preview night on Thursday; but, officially Friday was the first full day. It is a great show and so much fun to run into so many quilting friends. Yesterday was a volunteer day. I was one of the white glove ladies; you know, the ones who remind you NOT to photograph certain quilts, and NOT to touch the quilts. We can flip a quilt over to show the back with our white glove. I was stationed in O'Canada section. More on that later. Here are a few pictures I got before actually getting inside the show.

I'm sure most of you have heard about the Jelly Roll Race Quilt, AKA 1600 Quilt (you can see it here).

I added a border and that extra-wide rick rack. The green in the corners is because I ran out of the pink. I think that is called a design opportunity. It's named Sunkissed Jelly and is for my 18-year old granddaughter, Rachel, who will be visiting me next month for a week. I think it is a very girly quilt, don't you? She's pretty girly.

CUTTING KITS & MORE

Lyn Brown is teaching at the Two Wacky Women, October 14 - 16, 2011 Quilt Retreat. And, she has designed a quilt especially for the retreat. How exciting is that? So, today I have started cutting a few kits. Just look at these yummy Hoffman batiks.

NEWEST LUNCH SACK

I had mentioned that I was making a new lunch sack. Here it is, kinda: a new, easier-to-make lunch sack. It still needs some tweaking. It is interfaced with Insul Bright.

I covered the lining with iron-on vinyl for easier cleaning. It was surprisingly easy to work with.

Then I added a magnetic sew-in closer.

I'm not in love with the magnetic closure. I think it may work better with a zippered closure. Stay tuned.

WHAT'S NEW?

I have been sewing small projects the past few days. Some I can't show because the recipient may just read this blog. :-) But I can show you these cute lunch sacks I made.

The one on the right, with dogs, is for my granddaughter, Madeline. She selected the fabric when she was here visiting. I decided to make myself one at the same time. Now I am working on another one. I decided to create one that will go together a bit faster and add some handles. I should be able to show you the finished bag in a couple of days. Should.

This morning while I was out in my garden I noticed a couple of things. This tomato plant for one.

I didn't plant this tomato this year. It just didn't die from last year. We rarely, if ever, get a freeze. It is actually doing better this year and is loaded with Roma tomatoes. Go figure.

And, this avocado tree was planted when my grandson, Kalani, was born. He's eight now. It isn't ready until December or January. So, the fruit will get much larger.

And, this is the Friday when I get my all local, organic Beachgreens delivery.

I do love my Beachgreens.

ANOTHER FLIMSY READY TO QUILT

I took advantage of the long weekend and finished the next UFO quilt top on my list. It is just a flimsy at this point. Now to sandwich it, quilt it, bind it, and label it. It is pretty large; but, I am going to man handle it with my Janome 6600. Still thinking about how to quilt it.

That is a dark red pinwheel BTW. Now, what to use for the backing? Matchy or some off-the-wall unrelated bright?

CINDY'S 3RD UFO COMPLETED

This UFO of Cindy's isn't due to our guild until the August meeting. But, since I have another one to complete, I can check this off my list. This was the easiest one of Cindy's so far. She had made all the decisions with the exception of the binding. I found it in a bag layered (not pinned) complete with batting and backing. The backing was a surprise from what I had seen of Cindy's projects. But, I love it. All I had to do was pin it, quilt it, and bind it. I had this stripe in my stash that matches the colors. I still need to wash it and put a label on it.

This will go to our guild's community service group to donate to charity. Some new mother will like it for her baby.

OLD COMFY QUILTS

I have had this quilt for a long time. I thought it was one of my very first quilts; however, when I started quilting I was very good about labels. I even started out numbering each one. That was before it all got out of control. You know, buying fabric without projects in mind. Finishing tops and folding up the flimsies to start another project. Boxes, bags, or totes with partially finished quilts known as UFOs, WIPs, or PIGS sitting on shelves in the quilt room. This quilt IS labeled and it says #10. I have NO idea what those numbers would be today.

When my youngest granddaughter, Noelle, was visiting, each morning she would be the second one up. I was the first who made it out to the family room to have my coffee and news. She would leave her bedroom and walk right to the quilt rack and pick out this quilt to wrap up in. Every morning.

I think it may be the softest one I have. I have some with poodles, some with zebras and leopards; but this was her choice. Today I washed and dried it to mail off to her. I think it needs to live with her. :-)

VACATION'S OVER

My family has been visiting me since June 8th. What a great time. We took a road trip up to Northern California to see cousins near Sacramento and across the Bay Bridge to see more cousins near San Francisco. We stopped in to Saratoga for lunch with my dear friend, Sue; and showed the Grands the house Mom grew up in. We had a side jaunt to Morro Bay, a favorite spot and even took the kids to Bob's Big Boy. Kalani, my 8-year old grandson, ate a cheeseburger at each restaurant we visited. And, like all good grandsons will say, Grandma made the best cheeseburger (I think it was the guacamole).

Uncle Rich and Aunt Janet managed to visit from Utah and Idaho last weekend.

Lauren, my 15 year-old granddaughter asked me if we would be able to make it to Ruby's since it IS tradition. So, yesterday we had lunch at Ruby's on Seal Beach Pier. Ruby's makes the BESTEST milkshakes.

Today they are on their way back to Florida. Sigh............................... :-(

Think I'll take the rest of the day off and quilt tomorrow. Noelle, age 4 designed a quilt on her Leapster and asked that I make it for her birthday in December.

MAKING MEMORIES

This is one grandma who is just not a baker. But, an opportunity arose this morning when Noelle talked about her favorite cookie (in fact, the only cookie she likes I was told) the Chocolate Chip. So off to the cupboard to hunt for chocolate chips. Aha, there sat a half a bag of mini chips. Who knows why.

IT'S BEEN TWO YEARS GIVEAWAY

It is hard to believe that it was two years ago today that I made my first post here on Marilyn's Maze. Khristina from Australia was visiting me and said I needed a blog. So she helped me set it up big time; but, I didn't make a post for a long time after she went home. It was on June 15, 2009 that I finally put my toe in the water. And, what a joy I discovered. I have been having an enormous amount of fun getting to know so many new people from all over the world. I treasure each of you. My family is here visiting; but, I want to just take a bit of time out and offer these TWO (2) fat eight bundles.

Check out these cute shopping bags I sewed today. Not the little purple bag. But, the cute striped one and the one with the giant crab. That cute fabric came from Ikea. I know. They have some pretty cute fabric there and for good prices too. And it is perfect for Robin's Shopping Bag pattern. And they will be going to a couple of good homes.

The little purple bag is also from one of Robin's pattern, the Click-It Bag. I made this from the practice quilting on my last quilt. I just hate to throw out those little practice pieces, that is, if they come out somewhat decent. OK, back to pulling those threads to the back and binding. I'm getting pretty bored with that by now.

JUNE UFO PROGRESS

My next UFO is due to my guild, Quilters by the Sea, on June 9, 2011. So, I pushed the last couple of days to finish piecing the top.

It is inspired from "Thinking Outside the Box" by Sandi Cummings & Karen Flamme. I actually got the square in square blocks at a guild raffle about 7 years ago. I added the yellow squares and put the stripes on them. All I have to do now, is get it layered, quilted, bound, and a label put on it. But, I think my chances are looking good at this point. Now, how to quilt it? Any ideas? Frances?

BIRTHDAY PARTY

Quilters by the Sea celebrated its 17th birthday last night. We had cake and played Quilto. For those who might wonder, that is Bingo for Quilters. In preparation of it, I pressed 200 fat quarters into submission. These were given out as members arrived.

These were for sale for those who may need another one.

Obviously, quilters play for fat quarters not money. And, you know how in need we are of more fabric.

Pat Blank, one of our Charter members, brought the first quilt the guild made to commemorate its founding.

The picture is a bit blurry; but, I still wanted to add it because we ALL love Pat and she should just be here. We had a great time eating cake and playing Quilto.

This was my incoming mail.

Harry & David's Chocolate. My friend Khristina, from Australia, sent it to me. And, for no good reason either. We really like Khristina don't we.

OK, so I've had two pieces already. But, I've had it for a few days, and it is really delicious. Thank you Khristina, for you generosity and kindness.

This is my outgoing mail.

This is going to Australia; but, I can't tell you about it yet. Now to sew down those buttons and pop in the mail.
