HEXIES AND MORE

Have any of you been working on the Hexie BOM from The Hexie Blog? I have; but, of course I'm a little behind. I just finished the July BOM (okay, I'm a lot behind) and still need to appliqué it down.

August's  BOM is ready to start putting together.

In the meantime, I keep working on things I cannot show you. But, maybe just a tiny peek:

IT'S A GOAL

There hasn't been a whole lot of sewing going on recently; and, what I have been sewing, I cannot show you.  Everything is a surprise.  So, I leave you with these by which so many of us are ruled: 

Someday I will take a count on items 1 thru 6.

My goal for 2016 is to work on these and nothing new.  It's a goal; maybe not realistic, but a goal.

ROAD TRIP

I've been on a road trip with a friend visiting from New Zealand.

 We left Long Beach on Sunday, 10/27, 

and drove up the California Coast. Our first stop was Solvang, a cute small Scandinavian town. 

We spent two nights in San Luis Obispo visiting:

Moro Bay (I always like looking out at Moro Rock)

and Hearst's Castle.

Then we drove up scenic Highway 1 through Big Sur and took in 17 mile drive.  I don't know why neither of us took pictures.  Highway 1 is a very winding road and besides that there was a bicycle race on the road.  Made me a little nervous to say the least.

We stopped in Castroville, where they grow a LOT of artichokes. 

And even found an Artichoke food truck.  Yum!

Our next stop was a couple of nights in Los Gatos where I was able to meet up with two friends, one I have known since Elementary School and Brownies.  We hadn't seen each other for over 50 years.  The other friend has been a friend since we were kindergarten room mothers.  I really enjoyed visiting with both friends. Again, no pictures.

We also took in the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles.  Very nice!

Then it was off to Napa Valley and a stop at Sterling Winery.  It has a wonderful view.

We made our way over to Lincoln, California (next to Sacramento) and stayed at a friend's house for 4 nights (thank you Sue). Here we took in some sewing. 

We drove home on Highway 99 and stopped in Visalia and visited Thimble Town.  Loved it!

And, now it's home again where things are getting back to normal as you can see here.

BREAKFAST TREND??

Have you seen the newest trend for breakfast? You make it up before going to bed and have it ready for you the next morning. It can be a refrigerator oatmeal, a smoothie bowl, or a chia pudding. Chia seeds are getting a lot of buzz lately as being a super powerhouse of nutrition. It can't hurt. I've been adding it to my blender smoothies just because. But, I decided to gather the ingredients together for one of the chia puddings.

For me, it was still a bit thin. But, the taste was really good.  I will be trying a few other ones when the mood strikes me. I found a pumpkin chia pudding recipe on Pinterest. Yum!

TABLET STAND

I'm sure you've seen these on the internet.  I found this one on Pinterest. It could be an iPad stand. I just happen to have a tablet.

I often use my tablet for my cookbook or my patterns that I have stored there.  Yesterday when I tried to stand it up, and it kept falling, I said "That's it"!  I need to stop everything and make a stand.  Of course that led to two stands. I made the black one first (enlarging the pattern by a couple of inches all around). I decided the first one was a bit awkward, which led to the colorful one with a smaller front that was closer to the way the pattern reads. Actually, they both work fine. 

I must say, it has already made life simpler. I love them.

THREE FINISHED FLIMSIES! HOORAY!

I quilted three flimsies last week. It was a hot week and my quilt room is the coolest room in the house. Thus the three finishes. Plus, they were all baby quilts.

This first one I finished is a Granny Square quilt.  You can find the instructions for this all over the internet as a free pattern. I used a jelly roll and for the life of me I cannot remember whose it was. Maybe someone out there knows.

 

The second one is a Pinwheel Quilt. You can find the free pattern on the Moda Bakeshop web site. I used a charm pack of 30s fabric and white muslin. It only uses one charm pack.  I love this pattern; and, I often use it as my go-to baby quilt.

The last one is a panel I picked up a few years ago. It is made from a Lewe the Lamb panel and a couple of fat quarters. I cut it apart and added some four patches, rail fences and borders to get it a little larger. As it is it is only about 28 x 38.  I would use it to keep a baby warm in the grocery store, or as a stroller quilt, or maybe a wall hanging in the nursery.

All of these are earmarked for my quilt guild; for either an auction we are having in October or for the Marine family services. I will let the guild decide where they can best be used.

ROW BY ROW

Are any of you collecting the Row by Row Experience?  If you aren't familiar with it, you can read about it here. I've added a few more to my collection.  Love playing with these.  It's like a quilter's charm bracelet. 

 I finished the row I showed you a couple of weeks ago.  This is going out to my on-line group "Friendship Block Swap".  Only six of us are playing and we have two months to finish each row.  That gives us lots of time.  I am already passing on mine and the next person's row.

GETTING IT DONE

I have roofers here for a couple of days maybe longer. The weather forecasters keep telling us that we are having the mother of all mother El Ninos this winter. While we need the rain, we had all better be like the scouts and be prepared. Good news is I have secluded both dogs and myself in my quilt room and

you guessed it, I'm quilting. Actually getting quite a bit done.

NOELLE'S QUILT PART II

I picked up this as a kit at a quilt show a couple of years ago and realized that it was just waiting to be made into a Noelle Quilt. (Noelle is my youngest grand) She has moved from pink and purple being her favorite color to turquoise being favored.

In addition to turquoise, she loves owls. How can this not be a winner. Sending it up to Sue Salinger to quilt after I get together a backing. Maybe I have something in my stash. What do you think turquoise or lime green thread?
